Advanced Coatings International (Akron) and Mike Meador,
Polymers Branch
Topic: Water Soluble UV Curable Polyimides for Printed Circuit Solder MasksACI developed an advanced water-based coating for the manufacture of printed circuit boards. ACI estimates that this technology could save printed circuit board manufacturers 25 percent in operating costs and is working with a customer to test/evaluate the technology for real industry applications.

Advanced Coatings International Success Story

Catacel (Garrettsville) and Tom TomsikTopic: Spiral Stackable Reactor (SSR) For Low Cost Hydrogen ProductionCatacel has developed an alternative method for the production of commercial hydrogen that is more cost-effective than technology currently being used by industry. Test results from the GATE project have enabled them to negotiate with a customer for use in their hydrogen gas production facility. Initial estimates of cost versus performance appear very attractive and can open new end-user markets for the customer.

Catacel Success Story

Essential Research (Cleveland) and David ScheimanTopic: Quantum Dot Photovoltaic Test LaboratoryThe new clean room, test procedures and software of the new quantum dot photovoltaic test laboratory are all installed and operating. The new lab provides Essential Research with the capability to manufacture and sell near-infrared and laser light emitting diodes. New commercial work can be done in the facility that is also available to support possible NASA GRC work in space optical communications for the Photovoltaic and Space Environments Branch. Essential Research is in discussions with a commercial client for a novel semiconductor for near-infrared LEDs that will be used for plastic parts inspection.

Essential Research Success Story

Western DataCom (Westlake) and Phil PaulsenTopic: Secure PCMCIA CardWestern DataCom built a proof-of-concept prototype of the Personal Computer Memory Card International Association (PCMCIA) card for secure communications. Western DataCom and NASA GRC teamed to submit a joint proposal to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) that would result in the completion of the development initially proven with this GATE project. DataCom is also pursuing alternate funding sources. The company believes their strong partnership with NASA GRC and the results of the GATE award give them a clear advantage over the competition.
